Dr. Becker’s research focuses on the prediction of societally relevant climate variability and extremes, from weeks to decades into the future, and includes basic science research, applications, and science communication. She studies the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), an interannual climate pattern that originates in the tropical Pacific Ocean and affects climate, weather, and human health across the globe. Real-time prediction of societally relevant extreme events such as heat waves and flooding rains is another important component of Dr. Becker’s research portfolio, and her experience includes the seasonal North American Multi-Model Ensemble (NMME) and NOAA’s recent program to develop decadal projection services. She is currently funded by University of Miami’s Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing on a pilot project, led by Dr. Kilan Ashad-Bishop, to understand the impact of extreme weather and climate events on health system resilience.
